Silencing the Screen Sirens

The other day I am checking my team on Yahoo’s Fantasy Hockey when I am ambushed by a Victoria’s Secret “screen siren”. If you surf the web you know what I mean, opportunities to be enticed literally pop-up.

It is not just the Internet. The media and the marketplace are full of the sensuous. At times we feel tempted at every turn of the channel, the page, or the head to steal sexual gratification from forbidden places.

The authors of Everyman’s Battle suggest the following strategy in battling for sexuality purity:

  1. Train your eyes to look away from images/people that tempt us to lust.
  2. Submit your thinking, your daydreaming, your attractions to the rule of Christ.
  3. Strengthen your heart’s allegiance to your wife by cherishing her.

To be sure, these three steps don’t say everything that needs to be said. What would you add?

Openly (courageously) discuss your physical (sexual) needs with your wife.

Most of us assume they know (or should know) and we withdraw or get angry when our wives do not respond the way we would like or had hoped. the last thing we do is discuss sex needs openly with our spouses.

Joe you are definitely onto something in your comment.

The more openly I talk with my wife and the more I really listen, the more we both learn about the other, about how we are different. Not better or worse, just different.

Sexuality is one area in which often there are gender differences.

As a husband, young father and school teacher I am really concerned about the availibilty of images that can entice a man to lust. We really are enterring a battle for control of our mind on a daily basis. Through experience, I know how easy it is to let one slip in this area of our lives lead to a multitude of sins and pain. As men, we need to really step up to the plate and look out for each other and the young men in our families and congregation. Satan is throwing every type of perversity at our kids – they need men that will lead by example and invest the time into their lives to show them that there can be victory in this area of their lives.
