That first step is choosing not to be where you ought to be. David ought to be with his troops fighting the Ammonites. Instead he chose the leisure of his home.

Then “it happened”, that is how the ESV phrases what took place next (see v. 2). If David had been where he should have been then he wouldn’t have been walking on his roof top at the end of the day. And he wouldn’t have been some place from which he spotted a beautiful women bathing. Welcome to step two: being where you ought not to be. David arrived at the slippery slope and his look slid into lust, adultery and eventually murder. He fell hard and his failure had profound implications on his family.

Pretty simple and pretty scary. Guys when we choose not to be where we ought and then choose to be some place where we ought not to be we are pushing the gate open to the slippery slope.

12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1Co 10:12-13 NIV)

Let’s step back to the first Christmas. The angels announced to a bunch of guys:

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! (Lk 2:14)

The declaration of “peace” was good news to the shepherds centuries back and it is good news to us.

How do we avail ourselves of this God-given peace? The letter Paul wrote to the believers in Philippi gives us two things we can lean into.

First, we read,

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Php 4:6-7)

Projected economic downturn is not a time to wring our hands but to raise them heavenward in prayer, asking our Father who knows what we need to provide our daily bread.

Second, Paul writes,

What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me-practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (Php 4:9)

Social and employment uncertainty is not a time to stray from God’s truth, but to be doers of His Word, being rooted and ready because He guides us.

As we enter into a new year, headlined by gloomy forecasts, may we encourage one another to experience the peace of God and the God of peace.

Our at-home kids each have chores that are to be done during the weekend. The idea so they tell us is that during the school week they don’t have time, but during the weekend they do. If you haven’t already guessed, it doesn’t always work out that way. This past weekend was one of those. A son forgot. On Tuesday I talked to him about it, he promised to get them done that night. He only did part of them. On Wednesday we had another talk. More promises.

I find this kind of thing frustrating. I just wish the chores were done without all the drama.

This week I read:

11My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline
or be weary of his reproof,
12for the LORD reproves him whom he loves,
as a father the son in whom he delights. (Pr 3:11-12)

I learned two things. First, part of the role of a father is to discipline one’s children. Second, a father disciplines because he loves his children.

Those two things hit me. There are times when I let things slide because I don’t have the emotional gas to do the disciplining. There are times when my reproof is fueled by irritation and not love.

Looks like my son isn’t the only one that is coming up short!

They are not ranked…this is just the order they came up.

Understanding the women in our lives

Being connected with other guys

Knowing our role as a man

Finding freedom to be who we are to be

Being accountability to other men

Being disciplined to do what we ought to do

I would love to hear your take.
